The stranger comes in when the consciousness of my difference arises,
and s/he disappears when we all acknowledge ourselves
as foreigners, unamenable to bonds and communities
(Julia Kristeva, Strangers to ourselves)

Exile…exile…exile - there should be places to pause and rest; there should be voices to tell their stories; there should be images to envision their experiences; there should art to make sense of exile: writing, photos, digitality, internet…

This is a website open to the women who are exiled, who feel exiled, who share displacement, dislocation, non-belonging, the exile's torments and its aspirations.

This project started in Naples (Italy) and it took the name of 'The Paths of Exile'

it then moved to Istanbul and there it was called 'Exile Writing. Arts and Technologies of Women' (isea2011 Istanbul- for bibliographical references, see the section 'workshops'). In Istanbul, there were many women gathering from all over the world. Some were exiled, some knew of exile; together we watched films on the exile of women, we saw oeuvres of female photographers which deal with exile; we talked about exile; we decided to give shape to our feelings of exile with art …You can watch our - singular, exemplary - gestures of creation, innerved by the desire to share, to approach the complexity of its experience, to give hospitality to more works by women…

The website has been constructed by Melissa Ramos, a media artist who knows the pain and pleasure of exile http://www.melissaramos.com.au
The blog "Lingua di Cleopatra" has been the starting point and the gathering arena where to discuss the emergence of a new style of writing……

This project will go on - you will make it go on…

The Castle of Crossed Destiny is the title of the wonderful story by Italo Calvino. It narrates of a castle's room where people gather and rest; they are open to chance; the taroc cards they choose, trace the 'line' of their stories; the title of the cards provide them with the images to envision their experiences - art, creativity, invention – open to you…short stories, photostories, videos and all the visual re-articulations of your/our memories, lives, and aspirations towards the future.

There are more cards to choose - they are waiting for you, for your perception of the exile, for our sharing, for the strength and the beauty of women (de)construction their à-venir…
